Argentina's Pumitas 7s ended their Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games campaign with an emphatic victory and a bronze medal. The national youth side defeated Canada 36-5 at Stade Iba Mar Diop and converted semi-final disappointment into a collective response. It was Argentina's third medal at that moment; a later podium for swimmer Cecilia Dieleke raised the delegation's total to four.
Argentina controlled the bronze match from the first half. Augusto Gómez Alustiza's team led 14-5 at the interval and extended the gap afterwards without allowing Canada to reopen the contest. Federico Anderson was the leading figure with three tries. Santiago Martos, Ramón Benedit and Tomás Galetti completed the scoring, while Federico Kantz and Benjamín Fossati contributed with conversions.
The 36-5 margin reflects more than finishing efficiency. Argentina maintained speed to occupy space, pressure after each turnover and continuity through contact, three essential components of sevens. Conceding only five points in a medal game demonstrates the ability to defend in open field, a distinct demand from fifteen-a-side rugby where every individual mistake can become a try almost immediately.
The campaign began with two results that established the team among the contenders. Pumitas beat Uganda 49-0 and Japan 31-5, building confidence and points difference. They lost the final pool match 24-7 to eventual champions France. Defeat did not prevent semi-final qualification, but provided a first measure of the precision required against the strongest teams.
South Africa won the semi-final 24-12. Anderson scored Argentina's two tries and Kantz added a conversion, but the opponents managed the decisive moments more effectively. Missing the final could have carried the team into a second disappointment only hours later. The reaction against Canada therefore mattered as much as the score: the squad turned the setback into energy and refused to finish the tournament with consecutive defeats.
France secured gold by beating South Africa 26-19, leaving the latter with silver. Argentina completed the podium and extended a remarkable sequence: silver at Nanjing 2014, gold at Buenos Aires 2018 and bronze at Dakar 2026. Three consecutive editions among the best demonstrate that the result does not depend on a single generation, but on a youth structure capable of renewing players while retaining competitiveness.
The medal also serves as a starting point. The challenge is to support Anderson, Martos, Benedit, Galetti, Kantz, Fossati and the rest of the squad through the transition to senior competition without treating a youth podium as an automatic guarantee. Dakar produced one certainty: even after losing a semi-final, the team could rebuild. That response, combined with the speed and defence shown against Canada, is the delegation's most valuable asset.
