Argentina ended the first Sunday of competition at the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe with eleven medals: three gold, one silver and seven bronze. The haul began in open water before expanding into fencing, pool swimming and artistic gymnastics. Rather than representing one isolated result, the day provided an initial measure of the host delegation's breadth and competitive capacity across very different sporting environments.
Romina Imwinkelried opened the medal account. The Santa Fe swimmer finished third in the 10-kilometre open-water event and beat compatriot Candela Giordanino by only one tenth. Brazil's Ana Cunha, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, won the race. Imwinkelried's bronze therefore carried double importance: it was a high-level podium against elite opposition and Argentina's first celebration of the Games.
The first gold arrived shortly afterwards through Pascual Di Tella. The fencer defeated Venezuela's Eliecer Romero in the individual sabre final and took Argentina to the top of the ceremony. The same competition also delivered bronze for Juan Bacha, who had lost to Di Tella in the semifinals. One discipline consequently converted its knockout bracket into two medals for the national delegation.
Pool swimming produced a large share of the total. Macarena Ceballos won the women's 100-metre breaststroke in 1:06.80, while Martina Barbeito finished 2.46 seconds behind and collected silver. In the 50-metre backstroke, 17-year-old Cecilia Dieleke shared gold with Brazil's Etiene de Medeiros after they touched together. Andrea Berrino completed the podium and supplied another Argentine bronze medal.
Lucas Alba placed third in the men's 800-metre freestyle in 7:55.78, behind Brazilians Guilherme Da Costa and Stephan Steverink. The Argentine finished less than half a second from silver and later joined the men's 4x200 freestyle relay that also earned bronze alongside Máximo Aguilar, Guido Buscaglia and Matías Chaillou. Continuity between individual and team events helped sustain the volume of the national haul.
The women's 4x200 freestyle relay added bronze through Delfina Dini, Cecilia Dieleke, Laila Chain and Malena Santillán. Artistic gymnastics completed the count with third place in the men's team all-around. Ivo Chiapponi, Luca Alfieri, Daniel Villafañe, Nahuel Pardo, Matías Coralizzi and Santiago Mayol scored 304.400 points, behind Brazil on 310.500 and Colombia on 305.600.
Sunday's balance delivered three champions, one silver, seven bronzes and numerous protagonists at different stages of their careers. Competing at home turns every podium into momentum for Argentina, but also increases expectations for the days ahead. The Games have only begun and the medal table will continue changing. The opening reference is nevertheless established: Imwinkelried started the account and a diverse delegation rapidly transformed it into eleven awards.
