Emiliano Martínez finished fifth in the 2026 Yashin Trophy vote and was unable to add a third victory to those earned in 2023 and 2024. The men's award went to Unai Simón, Athletic Club goalkeeper and world champion with Spain. The result changed the recent picture of a distinction that had established the Argentine as its central reference for two consecutive seasons.

Dibu's nomination maintained an Argentine presence at the ceremony, although this time without the main prize. His fifth place belongs within a field of ten goalkeepers from different leagues and national teams. Martínez entered the vote linked to Aston Villa and Chelsea, while the final recognition rewarded Simón's season with both the Basque club and the Spanish national side.

The outcome does not erase the mark Argentina's goalkeeper has left on the award's short history. He became the first player to win it in two consecutive editions, taking the 2023 and 2024 trophies. That sequence consolidated an international reputation built on decisive performances, personality in high-pressure moments and continuity across competitions demanding the highest technical and emotional standards.

The men's shortlist also included Yassine Bounou, Thibaut Courtois, Joan García, Gregor Kobel, Édouard Mendy, David Raya, Matvey Safonov and Vozinha. Its geographic range showed that the debate was not limited to a single European league. Voters compared club performances, influence with national teams and the capacity to maintain consistency throughout an entire season.

The trophy bears the name of Lev Yashin, the Soviet Black Spider and the only goalkeeper to win the Ballon d'Or, in 1963. Created to recognise the position specifically, its male winners include Alisson Becker, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Courtois, Martínez and now Simón. No award was made in 2020 because of the pandemic, the only interruption in its chronology.

The ceremony also named Cata Coll the women's goalkeeper of the year. The Barcelona and Spain player succeeded Hannah Hampton, who became the first female winner in 2025. Coll prevailed over Ann-Katrin Berger, Hampton, Lorena and Ayaka Yamashita. Having both awards broadens the evaluation of goalkeeping and provides an equivalent benchmark for international women's football.

For Martínez, the immediate consequence is not a loss of relevance but the start of another comparative cycle. Fifth place keeps his name among the elite and turns the next season into a renewed measure of durability. For Argentina, the ranking confirms that its goalkeeper remains part of the global conversation, even though the 2026 Yashin Trophy marked a change at the top.
