Sol de Mayo lost their Federal A place after a relegation decision that stretched the tension all the way to penalties. The Viedma side drew 1-1 with Círculo Deportivo following 120 minutes at Villa Mitre’s El Fortín in Bahía Blanca, but fell 2-0 in the shootout. The result ended eight consecutive seasons in the division and sent the club to the 2027 Torneo Argentino del Interior.
The playoff condensed an entire campaign into one match at a neutral venue. Círculo arrived under Duilio Botella, while Diego Galván led Sol de Mayo into the contest. There was no future round in which to correct mistakes: the winner would preserve its place and the loser would join the already confirmed relegated clubs. That burden appeared immediately through intensity, caution and the treatment of every loose ball as decisive.
The Papero struck early. Vicente Barberini scored after seven minutes and gave Círculo an advantage that forced the Río Negro team to chase survival. Sol de Mayo needed patience to avoid losing their shape and remained in the game even as the clock increased the pressure. The equaliser finally came in the 70th minute through Héctor Morales, restoring balance and extending uncertainty around the outcome.
The 1-1 score did not change during the rest of regulation or the additional thirty minutes. Physical fatigue made the match increasingly closed, and the possibility of a single isolated play accompanied every attack, but neither team broke the deadlock. After two hours of football, survival had been reduced to a penalty shootout, a setting in which technical execution matters as much as resistance to psychological pressure.
Pedro Fernández then became the undisputed central figure. Círculo’s goalkeeper saved all four Sol de Mayo penalties, denying Valdebenito, Santiago Pérez, Fabio Giménez and Diego Dietz. At the other end Barberini failed to convert, but Jano Martínez and Francisco Grahl scored. Two successful kicks and four interventions by the keeper were enough for the Nicanor Otamendi club to complete a remarkable 2-0 shootout win.
Survival crowned an extreme Círculo recovery. The team needed victories in its final three assignments to stay in the category and completed that sequence across the last two Reválida matches and the playoff. It will therefore play an eighth consecutive Federal A season. For Sol de Mayo, by contrast, the shootout produced a painful conclusion and added their name to those of Tucumán Central, Sarmiento de Resistencia and Santamarina.
The impact now requires the Viedma institution to rebuild its sporting project in a different competition. Eight years of continuity do not disappear, but they cannot remove the organisational and competitive cost of relegation. The final image will be Fernández making four saves, although the process is larger than that scene. Sol de Mayo must examine the season that brought it to this limit and prepare a return attempt in 2027.
