Puerto Nuevo defeated Sacachispas 1-0 at the Carlos Vallejos stadium and reduced the gap to the leaders of Primera C’s Zone A. Lisandro Mércuri scored the goal that decided the round 22 match, played in heavy rain in Campana.
The pitch withstood the volume of water, although some areas became waterlogged. In those conditions, the teams completed a goalless first half and had to adapt their play to a surface affected by the storm.
The breakthrough came 21 minutes into the second half. Octavio López Rinaldi flicked on a corner at the near post and Mércuri completed the move to establish the 1-0 lead that the home side protected until full time.
Sacachispas had opportunities to equalise. A Durso header went narrowly wide and Vivanco failed to convert a rebound left by Ferrara as Puerto Nuevo defended the advantage created from the set piece.
The win was Puerto Nuevo’s sixth in their last nine matches. El Portuario reached 33 points and moved within two of Sacachispas, who remain first on 35 with a game in hand. The Campana side visit Juventud Unida next as they seek to maintain their progress.
