The 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain carries an earlier image that appears to have been written by time. In 2007, Lionel Messi was photographed with Lamine Yamal when the Spanish forward was only a few months old and there was no public sign of the careers that would bring them together nineteen years later.

The scene was captured by photographer Joan Monfort during a shoot for a charity calendar. Messi, then 20 and beginning to establish himself in Barcelona’s first team, helped bathe the baby alongside Sheila Ebana, Lamine Yamal’s mother.

The photograph illustrated January in the 2008 calendar, produced through a collaboration involving the newspaper Sport, the FC Barcelona Foundation and UNICEF. The initiative paired club footballers with children to raise money for social programmes supporting young people.

The meeting happened by chance. Lamine’s family applied for him to take part, while the organisers assigned the children to different Barcelona players, including Xavi Hernández, Carles Puyol, Andrés Iniesta and Ronaldinho. Messi and the baby were paired without knowing what the session would later represent.

Lamine’s subsequent journey turned the photograph into a remarkable document. He joined Barcelona’s academy at seven after arriving from CF La Torreta, progressed quickly through La Masia and made his first-team debut on 29 April 2023 at the age of 15 years, nine months and 16 days.

The image became public in July 2024 and moved from a family curiosity to a generational symbol. Messi had already ended his Barcelona career after winning 35 trophies, while Lamine was beginning to assume a central role in Spanish football.

They will now stand on opposite sides with the sport’s greatest trophy at stake. Argentina reached the final after coming from behind to beat England 2-1, while Spain advanced with a 2-0 win over France. A photograph born from a charity project now links the origins of two careers that will meet on football’s biggest stage.
