Atlético de Madrid confirmed the signing of Cristian Romero on Saturday, 15 August. The 28-year-old Argentine defender left Tottenham and agreed a deal with the Spanish club through 30 June 2031.

Neither club disclosed the official transfer fee. Reports in England estimated the operation at around €40 million, including the performance-related bonuses included in the agreement.

Cuti joins the back line of Diego Simeone's team. His intensity, leadership and commitment in every challenge give the Argentine coach an experienced option for the club's new cycle.

Romero completed five seasons at Tottenham. He initially arrived on loan from Atalanta in 2021 and made 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists before moving to Madrid.

His spell in England included the 2024/25 Europa League, Tottenham's first continental trophy in 31 years. He was named the competition's best player and became team captain the following season.

With Argentina, Romero won the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles and the Finalissima. He also played in the 2026 World Cup final, lost to Spain after extra time, and arrives at Atlético with 58 international appearances.
