Lionel Scaloni's continuity as Argentina head coach has entered a period of waiting. His contract runs until the end of December 2026 and no formal negotiation has begun to extend it. The Argentine Football Association want him to remain and retain a sense of optimism, while recognizing that a decision of this size requires time after such an intense competitive cycle.
Scaloni had publicly established his position after the World Cup final: he would complete the current agreement and then assess his future. Argentina lost that match 1-0 to Spain on 19 July in New York, and the coach avoided committing himself to another stage while he was still processing the tournament's physical and emotional cost. That caution remains the starting point for every possible conversation.
AFA do not intend to force the timetable. Claudio Tapia knows the institution wishes to retain the coach who led its most successful period in decades, but that intention still has to become a proposal and, above all, persuade Scaloni. The interval allows the emotional intensity surrounding the World Cup to decrease and gives him space to decide whether he has enough energy to restart the project.
The issue is no longer limited to a contractual signature. Lionel Messi has left the national team, creating a football, symbolic and daily absence inside the group. A side that built its identity around its captain must reorganize leadership, responsibilities and its way of playing. Cristian Romero is expected to assume the captaincy, although replacing Messi's influence clearly extends far beyond wearing the armband.
For Scaloni, remaining would mean directing a reconstruction rather than simply extending previous work. Elite players and a tested competitive structure remain, but another distribution of roles will begin. The staff must manage renewal, preserve standards and prevent constant comparison with the previous era from paralysing the new team. That task may be more draining than administering an already established foundation.
AFA can rely on a long working relationship and the recognition Scaloni has accumulated. Against that stands the fatigue of a process filled with trophies, pressure and extraordinary exposure. Optimism therefore does not mean that an agreement is close. Before duration, conditions or personnel can be discussed, the coach must provide the essential personal signal: his willingness to begin again.
The coming weeks matter because December is the contractual limit, although no date has been announced for formal talks. Argentina need clarity to organize their calendar and post-Messi transition; Scaloni needs to discover how much internal commitment he retains for the challenge. Continuity is the leadership's preferred outcome, but the decisive step will not be administrative. It will be the coach's conviction.
