Iván Nikolajuk returned to a South American podium and added two medals to a sporting story shaped by an extraordinary recovery. The Río Negro archer won silver in the men’s compound team event and bronze in the mixed compound competition at the Santa Fe 2026 South American Games. Each result expanded a career that, four years earlier, had come close to being interrupted permanently.
The episode that changed his life happened on June 6, 2022 in Bahía Blanca. A faulty heater filled his apartment with carbon monoxide, an odourless gas that exposed him for hours without warning. Nikolajuk collapsed while speaking by telephone with the woman who is now his partner. She arrived at approximately 11 that night and found him unconscious, an intervention that proved essential to his survival.
He was taken to the Municipal Hospital with severe poisoning, received intubation and mechanical ventilation and remained in intensive care. He spent three days in a coma, although a brain scan showed no injuries. Discharge did not end the process: he needed to recover strength, confidence and coordination before drawing a bow again. At that stage, uncertainty around ordinary life was greater than any competitive objective.
His response challenged the expected timetable. One month later he resumed training and, only four months after the poisoning, managed to compete at the Asunción 2022 South American Games. He won individual compound gold after defeating El Salvador’s Nelson Salinas 144-141 in the semifinal. That medal turned his recovery into a public story, but he refused to leave it frozen as a single exceptional achievement.
At Santa Fe 2026, Nikolajuk returned not merely as an astonishing survivor but as an established member of the national squad. He shared men’s team silver with Nelson Salinas and Lucas Garcés. He also earned mixed compound bronze alongside González Briozzo. Argentina had beaten Chile 155-152 in the quarterfinals and secured the podium after overcoming Venezuela in a shoot-off for third place.
The athlete from General Conesa, whose preparation is connected to Círculo Bahiense de Arquería, therefore links different territories and stages of life. His record also includes gold at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. Yet the value of his campaign cannot be reduced to the number of podiums: it lies in rebuilding an elite sporting routine after an invisible and potentially fatal domestic emergency.
The Santa Fe silver and bronze provide a different conclusion from the Asunción gold, but confirm the same essential idea. Nikolajuk did not return simply to finish one competition after a coma; he remained through another cycle, helped form competitive teams and continued producing international results. His story is also a warning about carbon monoxide and an example of recovery that acknowledges the danger while establishing lasting sporting continuity.
