Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup final produced a development that went beyond sport. After the victory over England, several members of the squad celebrated on the pitch with a white banner carrying the phrase “Las Malvinas son argentinas”.

Giovani Lo Celso and Lisandro Martínez were among the players seen holding and waving the banner in front of the Argentine supporters. The scene unfolded during the celebrations for the 2-1 win that secured a place in the title match against Spain.

The images generated an immediate response in the United Kingdom. A British tabloid devoted its front page to the episode and described Argentina’s celebration in derogatory terms, while criticising the players for introducing the territorial claim into a World Cup celebration.

The reaction once again connected football, memory and politics in a rivalry marked by historical events. Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, while the archipelago remains under British administration.

The episode does not alter the sporting result or Argentina’s preparation for the final, but it broadened the impact of the victory. What began as a celebration on the field became an international discussion about symbols, national identity and the boundary between sport and politics.

Argentina must now focus on the title match against Spain. The banner, however, has already become part of the visual record of a semifinal that transcended the score and again showed that some World Cup encounters carry meanings extending far beyond ninety minutes.
