Independiente Rivadavia drew 1-1 with Fluminense at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium in Mendoza and were eliminated in the Copa Libertadores round of 16. The Brazilian side won the penalty shootout 5-4.
The first leg had finished 0-0, leaving the tie open for the return match. That balance held for much of the night before the decisive moments arrived in the second half.
Fluminense went down to ten players 12 minutes after the break when Canobbio received a second yellow card. Despite the disadvantage, the visitors took the lead in the 30th minute through Serna after Hércules played a pass in behind.
Independiente Rivadavia equalised in the 50th minute of the second half. A VAR review detected a handball by Ignácio, and Arce converted the penalty to make it 1-1 and send the tie to a second contest from the spot.
Thiago Silva, Renê, Hércules, Martinelli and Guga scored for Fluminense in the shootout, while Acosta missed. Fernández, Villalba, Salas and Arce converted for the Lepra, but Bobadilla and Atencio failed to score.
Fábio saved two penalties to secure the 5-4 win that sent Fluminense into the quarter-finals. The Brazilian club await the winner of Platense against Coquimbo Unido, while Independiente Rivadavia's continental campaign is over.
