Independiente Rivadavia’s 1-0 victory over Barracas Central produced an image as unusual as it was revealing of the match’s intensity. Thirty-five minutes into the second half, a contest beside the touchline ended with Tomás Bottari colliding with Alfredo Berti and bending one of the visiting coach’s crutches. The incident caused no injury, but it forced Berti to direct the closing stretch with only one support.
The sequence began when Rodrigo Insúa challenged Bottari forcefully for the ball next to the Mendoza team’s bench at the Claudio Fabián Tapia stadium. The foul knocked the Independiente Rivadavia midfielder off balance, and his momentum carried him beyond the field and directly into his coach. The referee booked the Barracas defender for the severity of the challenge. As Bottari fell, he struck the crutch and left its frame unusable.
Berti, 54, was wearing an orthopaedic boot on his right leg and using two crutches because of a fracture around the fibula suffered during a squad training session. That condition made the collision an immediate source of concern on the visiting bench. However, the coach was not fully knocked down, took no blow that aggravated the problem and remained beside the pitch. The material consequence was a broken support rather than a fresh physical injury.
Far from leaving his position, Berti kept issuing instructions until the end while leaning on a single crutch. The scene added tension to a night when his side had to defend a narrow and valuable lead. Sporting attention remained on the field: Independiente Rivadavia resisted Barracas’ attempts, managed the advantage and completed a victory with important effects in both the annual standings and Clausura Zone B.
José Florentín had scored the only goal near the beginning of the match. That early difference forced the home side to chase an equaliser and allowed the visitors to play from ahead without ever relaxing. The incident involving Insúa, Bottari and Berti came late, when necessity had increased the friction surrounding every loose ball. The yellow card punished the foul, and play resumed without the sideline accident changing the score.
