The buildup to the semifinal between Argentina and England has revived a scene from another era. Lionel Scaloni and David Beckham, now connected to their national teams in very different roles, were involved in a heated confrontation years ago during a match between Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña.
The episode took place at the Santiago Bernabéu in an important fixture in the 2003/04 Spanish league title race. Real Madrid had just gone 2-1 ahead through a Raúl goal when Beckham fouled Scaloni from behind near midfield.
Both players became tangled on the ground and the reaction was immediate. Scaloni responded from the turf, got up to confront the English midfielder and the exchange escalated into pushing and grappling. Roberto Carlos stepped in to separate them before the incident became more serious.
The referee settled the situation by booking both players. The anger, however, did not end with the cards or the final whistle. Years later, Scaloni recalled that frustration with the match and the result had fuelled a reaction that continued even after the game.
The footage has resurfaced because Argentina and England are preparing to compete for a place in the 2026 World Cup final. Scaloni will now be on Argentina’s bench, while Beckham will follow the match as one of the most recognisable historical figures in English football.
The old episode will have no sporting influence on the semifinal, but it adds another layer to a rivalry filled with memory. Two protagonists from that clash meet again around a decisive match, this time with the history of their national teams at stake.
