Argentina once again find themselves outnumbered by Europe in the decisive stage of a World Cup. Spain, France and England fill three of the four semifinal places, while Lionel Scaloni’s team are the only non-European side still competing for the title.

The bracket recalls the situation in Qatar 2022. In that tournament, Argentina also advanced while surrounded by UEFA powers and ultimately broke a run of four consecutive European champions stretching from Germany 2006 to Russia 2018.

European dominance became more visible as the competition progressed. Six UEFA teams reached the quarterfinals and three of them moved into the last four. Argentina preserved the only exception by eliminating Switzerland and keeping their bid for back-to-back titles alive.

The semifinal against England therefore carries a dimension beyond the history shared by the two national teams. If England advance, the World Cup will again feature an all-European final; if Argentina win, the defending champions will once more interrupt that continental dominance.

Scaloni’s team have not yet reached their best level, but their competitive resilience has already proved decisive in tight matches. Lionel Messi remains at the centre of a campaign that challenges time and now confronts rivals led by figures such as Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.

Argentina have never lost a World Cup semifinal and will try to extend that record to move within one match of retaining the title. Europe holds the majority, but the Albiceleste once again appear as the team capable of changing an outcome that seemed reserved for the dominant continent.
