Santa Fe entered international swimming's calendar by hosting the World Aquatics Junior Open Water Championships from 3 to 6 September. Parque del Sur lake welcomes 273 athletes from 39 countries, a participation record for the competition. The gathering combines sporting importance, organizational experience and a rare opportunity for Argentine spectators to observe the next generation on an urban open-water course.
The championship serves swimmers aged 14 to 19 and allocates races by age and distance. Argentina have selected ten athletes: Valentino Cheruse, Felipe García, Tomás Jouglard, Mateo Mayer, Lautaro Milton and Thiago Pizzini Paz in the men's events; Martina Delpodio, Sofía Garcés, Victoria Nestares and Sofía Ovalles in the women's. Racing at home reduces travel but places the squad directly inside a large, demanding international field.
The opening day was devoted to the 10-kilometre races. Hungary's Máté Karpati won the men's event and Italy's Ludovica Terlizzi prevailed among the women. For the home team, Tomás Jouglard finished 18th and Sofía Garcés earned 15th place. Those results established the first competitive references while testing pacing, feeding and interpretation of the course across the programme's longest endurance distance.
Friday 4 September continues with 7.5 kilometres for the 16-17 age group and five kilometres for swimmers aged 14-15. Saturday introduces a three-kilometre Knockout Sprint: after an initial race, half the field progresses to 1,500 metres and a 500-metre final decides the leading places. The format brings tactics, acceleration and rapid recovery into a discipline more commonly associated with sustained, long-distance effort.
On Sunday 6 September at 10:00, the mixed 4 × 1,500-metre relay will close the championships. It adds collective coordination to an essentially individual sport, as each country must manage the order of its swimmers, changing speeds and the handover of a competitive position. The relay also gives delegations one last chance to transform a week of preparation and individual work into a shared result.
The World Championships have an operational purpose as well. The same Parque del Sur lake will stage the 10-kilometre race at the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe, scheduled from 12 to 26 September. More than four thousand athletes representing fifteen countries are due to attend those Games. This junior event allows organizers to inspect safety, course markers, boats, medical support, timing and coordination before the next international appointment.
Santa Fe's international role extends beyond these four days. The South American race on 13 September will award national Olympic committee quotas for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, increasing the strategic value of the venue. The city is not simply offering scenery; it is rehearsing infrastructure for future competition. With record participation, ten Argentine swimmers and a varied programme, the championships place Parque del Sur firmly on open water's world map.
