Defensa y Justicia settled in one half a match with direct consequences in Torneo Clausura Zone A. El Halcón beat San Lorenzo 3-0 at the Norberto Tomaghello stadium, regained second place and strengthened their position among the playoff qualifiers. El Ciclón, by contrast, produced another worrying display and moved further from both the knockout stage and continental competition in 2027.

San Lorenzo attempted to begin with high pressure and showed some attacking intention, but the home team’s first clear move ended in a goal. After 11 minutes, Defensa built from their own half, Maximiliano Porcel released Jeremías Lucco and the forward finished past José Devecchi. The sequence exposed how easily the Florencio Varela side crossed lines and changed the atmosphere of an initially balanced contest.

Rubén Darío Insúa’s team sought a response and put the ball in the net twice, although both goals were correctly disallowed for offside against Rodrigo Auzmendi and Alexis Cuello. Those actions maintained a sense of competition without changing the score. Defensa waited for their moment, moved the ball with greater precision and struck again as the first half entered its closing minutes.

In the 45th minute, David Barbona curled a delivery toward the far post and David Martínez arrived onside to make it 2-0, as VAR later confirmed. Three minutes later, Porcel found Barbona free near the penalty spot and the midfielder finished with quality for the third. Two nearly consecutive goals transformed a manageable deficit into an almost irreversible situation.

Insúa made changes after halftime, including Facundo Gulli and Matías Reali, to move the team higher. San Lorenzo gained more territorial presence and created some approaches, but lacked the precision required to reduce the gap. Defensa managed the tempo, protected their penalty area and retained the ability to threaten in transition. Greater sustained acceleration might even have produced a wider margin.

Victory returned El Halcón to second place in Zone A and established them firmly inside the round-of-16 positions. It also improved their annual-table situation: Defensa moved within one point of Estudiantes de La Plata, the last side occupying a Copa Sudamericana qualification place. The performance combined efficiency in both penalty areas, tactical understanding and an ability to close the match without difficulty.

San Lorenzo left Varela in the opposite position. They have won only three Clausura matches, sit five points behind Lanús and Newell’s in the battle for the last playoff places and have almost exhausted their continental possibilities. Visiting supporters expressed their anger toward the club leadership. The next match against Deportivo Riestra at the Bidegain is already a sporting and emotional test for a team forced to react.
