Argentina and England will contest one of the 2026 World Cup semifinals on Wednesday, July 15, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The decisive match will take place in a venue that combines sporting spectacle, technology and environmental infrastructure on a scale rarely seen in football.
The stadium was the first professional sports venue in North America to earn LEED Platinum certification and also received TRUE Platinum certification for its zero-waste program. Those distinctions reflect a design in which energy efficiency, water management and waste reduction are part of the building’s daily operation.
Energy is one of the pillars of that model. The complex has around 4,000 solar panels capable of producing approximately 1.6 million kilowatt-hours per year. That renewable generation is complemented by architectural and operational solutions that reduce electricity use by about 29 percent compared with a similar conventional stadium.
Water management also has an urban dimension. The stadium has a 2.1-million-gallon stormwater system, including a 680,000-gallon cistern and a 1.1-million-gallon underground vault. Recovered water is used for irrigation and cooling towers, while the overall system helps retain and slowly release excess water during heavy rain.
Its waste policy diverts more than 90 percent of materials generated at events through reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. The same operational logic includes an eight-panel retractable roof, efficient lighting and a large circular video board that connect the fan experience with the stadium’s technological systems.
For Argentina, all of that infrastructure will frame a historic semifinal against England. The innovation of the venue will not change the essence of the challenge: two national teams with a deep World Cup rivalry will compete in Atlanta for a place in the tournament’s decisive match.
