Argentina's influence returned to the center of the 2026 World Cup, this time through an unexpected voice. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente cited Lionel Scaloni and Gustavo Alfaro as references to explain how he understands the leadership of a national team at a decisive stage.

During the press conference before Spain's quarterfinal against Belgium, the Spanish coach highlighted Scaloni's football ideas and human approach. Rather than focusing on systems or tactical movements, he emphasized the way the Argentine manager built a competitive group around a shared purpose.

De la Fuente also recalled Alfaro's reflection on values-based leadership. For Spain's coach, that way of leading carries particular strength because it organizes the team through coexistence, responsibility and the ability to bring together players who contribute both on and off the field.

The comparison was not accidental. Scaloni entered the tournament as the reigning world champion and a two-time Copa América winner, while Alfaro led Paraguay to the round of 16 after eliminating Germany before a 1-0 defeat to France. Two different paths that, in De la Fuente's view, share the same priority: managing people before imposing isolated tactical answers.

Spain's coach extended that praise to Lionel Messi, whom he presented as an example for younger players because of his commitment and permanent desire to compete. He also supported Lamine Yamal, stressing his willingness to carry out defensive duties and continue developing throughout the tournament.

At a World Cup shaped by pressure and immediate demands, De la Fuente's words placed Argentine coaches among the international references for leadership. The recognition went beyond results and highlighted a school of management in which the group, values and a sense of belonging become central parts of performance.
